"2000 Honda CRV upgrade, most bang for buck" 2010-03-07

Pro - double DIN, subdued appearance, USB playback, front audio input, expandable

Con - can have any background color as long as it's green, not all controls are readable in the dark and about that double-din size.

First - big compliments to the vendor - DiscountsJungle for quick shipping and professional packaging. Hats off, if I see your name in the words of anything else I shop for I'll pick you.

I wanted an inexpensive head unit for a 2000 Honda CRV that had a double DIN CD-Cassette. I mostly wanted aux input or iPod control and amongst all the off brands out there that I felt leery of buying online I spotted this one. I didn't want something with a 7 color LED display all ablaze nor did I want a standard size unit in an adaptor plate. This Panasonic CQ-5800U met all the requirements and was the closest thing to perfect I found. Did I mention the price? It's an incredible low $130 shipped.

Installation went OK. Getting to the head unit in this CRV requires lots more dash dissemblance than expected. There are some excellent resources online of the process. Put "97-01 honda crv radio removal" in the web search box, I found several. It was a minor letdown that the CQ-5800U's height/width was slightly smaller than the stock radio, if I chose to use the same mounting screws I would be left with a gap all around the face of the unit. I decided to follow the book and use the DIN sleeve in the dash. That required trimming some tabs on the car's radio console. The DIN sleeve fit tight, the CQ-5800U likewise. A trim piece fits in the Honda's radio pod ok. My CQ-5800U came with a wiring diagram update. Do pay attention to it.

Operation has been great. The stock speakers sounded tinny with the stock unit, the EQ presets on the Panasonic eek out the best it can do with the speakers, good enough that I don't need to run out and buy new ones immediately. It plays retail CDS, CD with MP3s burned to them, front aux jack takes the iPod and new to me is playing MP3s from a thumbdrive. I really like that feature, have come to love it and found a use for all those 528mb thumb drives I have laying around.

The CQ-5800U panel lighting is typical alien green. I wish it could switch to alternative orange to match the car, since the physical looks of the CQ-5800U match the car to a tee. Not all the labels on the panel are lit, you'll need to memorize the alternate uses of the up/down/left/right and 1-6 buttons are. Luckily the CRV's map light is aimed right at the center stack.

NOAA Weather radio is a good feature for distance travelers.

"What the Acura Integra GSR should have shipped with!" 2010-01-20

I hsve a 2000 Acura Integra (4 door GSR) that I have tried to keep well maintained and as 'perfect' as possible. I really like the car and given my 2 mile commute to work, no reason to upgrade it! However, while the car is really well built unlike the modern Acuras the audio system on the Integra was less than ideal. I first replaced the speakers with Polk Momos and then the main head unit with an Alpine with XM radio integrated. I then replaced that with a double din Eclipse head unit with GPS and Sirrius (I have written a review about that). However, once the Eclipse just died on me I decided to go with a unit with simpler but better build quality.

After look around for awhile I found this panasonic. First, it fits perfectly into the double din slot and the aesthetics matches the dash perfectly! In fact the dash looks better than the original in every way. Personally I don't like blinking lights and the blue and red stuff. So the conservative and staid Panasonic looks very close to the original Acura head unit but is double din instead of single din and has many more features.

It has usb for direct mp3 plug in from a drive. Works very well (unlike the Eclipse), the Aux jack is perfect for an ipod and the radio and Cd player work well. The controls are very well laid out and easy to get to. No extra blinking lights and stuff.

I highly recommend this product. I can't imagine it is so cheap. Definitely worth at least 2x as much. In fact the Eclipse was 3x as much and was much worse build quality and the Alpine was over 2x as much and did less overall.

Purchased jan '10 from Sonic Electronix for 114.99, 0 shipping plus tax. They included (free) a double din mounting kit and the wire harness.

The radio has most everything going for it except the bass tone could be better. I have used my USB stick (not included)with 244 songs on it-works well in the Panasonic. The weather band is great!

Great radio for the price- fit right into an 09 Super Duty with the adapter kit.

Sonic Electronix is a good outfit to deal with-The shipper, Ontrac wasn't the greatest but ok.

"Nice Radio, But..." 2009-11-25

Don't make my mistake and assume that any double DIN radio will fit a 2000 Ford F-250 radio hole. Same installation problems as the guy with the Ford Ranger. Apparently the unit will drop right into some stock openings (like Toyotas), but not Fords of this era. Once I was able to modify and install the thing, it seems like a good radio at a decent price. I was mainly after the aux in jack and the weather band is an added bonus that you don't see on many radios. The MP3 jack may be another nice feature down the road if I ever join the Ipod crowd. For now I was looking for a good way to hook up my portable Sirius radio to my car stereo. Make sure to spring for an adapter cable to simplify the electrical end of installation. Otherwise you will have to solder the pigtail that Worldwide sends to your vehicle's wiring (in which case you'd better have excellent color differentiation skills to tell the black w/ pink stripe wire from the brown w/ pink stripe wire - that one only cost me 2 hours or so). Radio has good power and good sound with my stock speakers.

"Nice stock replacement" 2009-11-12

Great unit. I bought it to upgrade the tape deck in my old Camry but wanted something that wouldn't look out of place. The stock support brackets fit right on so installation only took half the time. Easy to operate and view while driving. The USB port reads flash drives fast and works well. It takes 4-5 seconds to read my full 2 gig micro SD card from a USB card reader and after that the controls are just as fast or even faster than any ipod or high end mp3 player. Radio reception is better than the original unit.

A couple things disappointed me. The illumination is great except nothing is around the volume knob and jogger button. Also some illumination around the 3.5mm AUX in and USB port would have helped. There is no amp signal or power antenna output. The wires are on the harness but they are dead and listed as unused in the wire diagram. I still think $120 is a little too much but if it really turns out to be "Heavy Duty" then maybe not.

I have bought Pioneer products in the past which has always been great. primarily because of their Supertuner. I have read the specs of the new models for 2009 under FM usuable sensitivity, the tuner might not seem to be as strong as the previous ones in the past. From last year on back to the five or six years (all models), the FM usuable sensitivity was measured at 8dBf(best) which indicates it's ability to pull in weaker stations, the lower the number, the better. The new 2009 models are measured at 11dBf and the higher end models are rated at 9dBf, which is not as good as 8dBf. With the economy the way it is, I wonder if Pioneer is cutting corners on it's Supertuner? I don't see anything super about that!!!

problem with my P7000BT unit. sometime it connect to my cell phone without audio and other time it wont connect at all, with my ipod touch (2nd gen with ver. 3.1.3)at least once a week it would crash my ipod to the black apple screen after a few min the ipod return to normal I don't have problems with my ipod until I connect it to the radio,Pioneer response is take it to a shop but the problem is within the firmware which there is no update or should I say moved on to other model and gave this one the bird.

If you have any problems with this unit outside of Amazon's return policy, you are out of luck. Pioneer will not support this product. I found this out after I reported the following bugs to Pioneer. These bugs exist in both the FH-P8000BT and the DEH-P7000BT. There are no fixes for these bugs. While I do like both of these units, it is quite a pain to have to keep working around these problems. Pioneer could fix these problems, but their support staff and supervisors cared more about giving multiple reasons as to why I'm unsupported rather than trying to improve their products. It was a very poor customer experience.

1) If you have an iPod Touch or iPhone attach to the USB connector before the unit starts up, there is 50% chance the unit will not detect your attached device. This is a boot up detection bug in the firmware. You will not be able to select USB as the source because the device will think that nothing is connected to the USB port. You will need to disconnect your device and reconnect it for the unit to detect and use the iPod Touch or iPhone. I do not know if this problem extends to other iPods, or if it is limited to the iPod Touch and iPhone.

2) The unit will let you pair up to 3 phones via Bluetooth. The manual states that "Automatic connection is performed in the registration number order." I purchased both of these units so that they would auto connect to my and my wife's phone depending on who was in the car. This would have been a seamless and intuitive hands-free experience. That is not the case. These units will not auto connect to more than one phone. They will only auto-connect to the last phone that you manually selected. You have to go through the cumbersome UI and manually connect another phone to the unit. With this bug, when I drive my wife's car, I have to manually connect my phone to the unit. After I'm done, I then have to manually connect my wife's phone back to the unit. If I don't reconnect my wife's phone after my phone, then she'll drive around with an unconnected phone. She won't have hands free calling unless she checks for the connection each time and manually reconnects. This unit works well for one Bluetooth connected phone. If you want to use more than one phone, then this unit will not be a set-it-and-forget-it solution.

I am disappointed with few things about this cd-reciever:

The sound is not as good as I expected it to be. The difference from the simpler brands usually provided with leasing cars used to be immense but now it is not so anymore.

The interface is not intuitive at all and hard to teach others who use the cars. My girlfriend really dont like it and hardly use any of the radio capabilities.

The BT speaker and microphone sound awful. I gave up using it and use my regular BT earphone while in the car.

I bought a perfectly normal and working 16 GB sundisk usb device to use with the receiver but it does not work with the receiver (and only with it) and I cant to nothing about it.

I have had this installed for about a month now. I really like the sound quality and the integration with my iPhone. However, every time I plug in my phone I get a message that this device is not designed to work with the iPhone and requesting that I turn off the phone, which defeats the purpose of bluetooth. Annoying, but I just hit no and the pop-up goes away and it works fine anyway. I really dislike the user interface on the radio. Very counterintuitive and difficulty to navigate through the menus. This is the radio's worst point. You can not use this without the instruction manual, which is not well written. The remote would be nice if it worked well, which it does not. I point it directly at the radio faceplate and press away and it picks up maybe one out of every 5-6 button pushes. Pointless. This gets 4 stars anyway because the price is great and it does what I want it to. I pop my iPhone in the cradle and it starts charging and playing music through USB. The Bluetooth for iPhone was a little quirky at first and I had to pair the devices a few times before it worked right, but now it works great. In all, for the price, I am pretty happy with this buy.

I had done lots of research before buying this stereo.As of now i have been using this one for more then 7 months with no issues.

+++ my selling point was the bluetooth.I never heard any one saying i sounded bad on phone while using this.

+++ easily removable faceplate.

+++ Sound quality is awesome when connected to iphone via usb or A2DP.

--- hard to read display.

--- I still dont like the KNOB.It functions differently.I am not used to it yet.

Highly recommended.

"Recommended for iPod Touch owners" 2009-11-20

Overall, I am pretty satisfied with this product. Installation was easy and straightforward. It is fairly easy to get accustomed to the controls. Sound quality is crisp through my speakers, and there are various presets that help tweak your sound to the type of music you enjoy. The movie that plays in the background is neat to watch. The best feature of this product, however, is the ability to control your iPod directly from the head unit. There is a front USB port on the face of the unit, so it is easily accessible (i.e. no need to run cables through your glove compartment). The USB port also reads USB memory sticks that contain MP3 files, which is a nice feature. There is also a straight audio jack in the front as well for those with other devices, such as MD players (does anyone still own one), walkmans, etc.

The only cons that I have for this product are as follows:

1. The display can be hard to read during the daytime.

2. Languages other than English do not appear to be supported.

With regards to #1, the clock display is also rather small, which makes it hard to tell the time during the day. It is possible to have the song title display in a larger font, but the screen is not as bright as my previous head unit. On #2, I was not really expecting this unit to support Japanese text, so no real suprise that any songs on my iPod with Japanese text did not display names properly.

This head unit has been a great buy so far, and I was glad that I purchased it over the CDXGT930UI, since it was $30 cheaper and had the USB connection in the front. I have tried the Belkin TuneBase FM for iPod (~$90), and was severely disappointed with not being able to hear a song in its entirety before having to switch FM stations. Luckily, I had borrowed one from my friend, so I was not $90 in the hole. The CDXGT730UI was a far better choice for listening to my iPod Touch (and it charges the player at the same time!)

"A great headunit for the price" 2009-10-22

I've had this headunit in my car for a few months now, running to an Alpine amp (for my 12" Type-R in a self built custom enclosure) and a Denon amp (powering a pair of JL Audio VR650 cxi).

To keep it simple, this is a great HU for under $150. It comes with lots of useful features, iPod integration, a beautiful screen, and just a nice style overall. The biggest thing I would like to see changed would be an improved custom equalizer. While you have a decent amount of control over the EQ, I would prefer to tune the response at more frequencies.

It does have 3 pre-amp outputs, which is great.

I recommend this headunit if you're looking for one that works and gives you some tools to tune your sounds. I searched for a long time in the < $200 range before I decided on this one, and I really have no regrets about it. good luck!

The interchangeable colors is also a plus.

I think that as of now, I am very happy with this radio. It has been installed into a Harley and I have had several other Sonys over the years in this same bike with this same set up and for some reason this deck sounds louder and more clear than other decks I have had in the past. If your wondering why I go though so many radios, it rains and rain and electronics don't seem to get along, but the sony is about the most weather resistant radio I have found.

"Best Deck I've Ever Owned" 2009-07-06

PROS: I have been trying to duplicate studio-quality sound in an automobile since the early 1980's when I bought my first Kenwood deck with speakers, sub and mono-block amp. This is, for the most part, a fruitless endeavor due to road noise, chamber size, etc. Well, I bought a new car with its "Audiophile" sound system (please!) and immediately replaced all 8 speakers with JBL's pro line speakers, and tried to use a Kenwood tube with it as a sub. This didn't work so well, so I bought a beefy JBL 8-channel amp to go with the speakers and it sounded much better....but not quite good enough. Working with Level 10 in Mesa, AZ, we decided that the factory deck/changer was the weak link. So we replaced it with the Eclipse 5030.

This is one helluva deck. It has clean power (nice, but not needed in my case), but more importantly excellent sound to my amplifier. It is feature-rich and - get this - has tech support staffed by people who actually speak-a-da-language. The CD 5030 IS truly an audiophile system. I'd have to now admit that it is actually the first deck I have owned, despite all my previous systems that I thought were of that caliber, that I can say is for audiophiles.

One great feature is Time Alignment - you place the microphone on the center of the driver-side headrest, hold down the 6 key, and get out of the car before the countdown reaches zero (You leave the system on for this, of course). Then, about 90-120 seconds later, you return to the car and the system is set for YOUR ear's listening pleasure. Oh, sure, it has a 'Position' option in the Sound menu that allows you to choose Front, Rear or Off - that is nice. But the Time Alignment computes the delay for each speaker to the microphone so it is much more precise. I love this deck and would recommend it to anyone.

CONS: only a couple of things: it would be nice if the display were in color instead of black & white. But, much more importantly to me, the deck does not have a Pause function when playing CD's.

The good news is that, when a call comes in (assuming you are using the unit's Bluetooth feature) it does pause the CD during the call; the bad news is that, if you simply want to pause a CD so you can order a hamburger at the drive-through, you have to hit the Source button once to get to "Input" and then, when you want th3e CD to come back on, you have to learn how many times to press the Source button to get back to the CD. It's a real pain, but Eclipse says it's been that way for many years now - even the highest-end unit Fujitsu sells (Eclipse 7200 MKII) doesn't have a pause button.

Overall: 99.9% fantastic, with very few issues keeping it from being 100% fantastic.

I do not like this car stereo. I am going to try to return it for a refund. First time I ever said that about a Kenwood.

Pros - good sound when listening to music, ipod control and plug in on the front

cons - when trying to use the bluetooth there is a horrible buzz so I cannot hear who I am talking to (they can hear me fine) and when I turn the volume up to try to hear them over the buzz, they then can only hear the buzz. There is not buzz when listening to ipod, cds, or radio. Also the features on this radio are complicated to set and use. It is easier to dial my phone or search or a radio station than to set them up in favorites and use them.

I bought a new stereo basically for the bluetooth compatability. I would have been better off buying the cheap off brand we bought our daughter. It is crystal clear.

The last two reviews were mostly dead on. There is so much to say about this unit I'll just interject my experience and differences of opinion and try to keep it short and sweet.

I have had the unit installed for about a week. I love the look and the clean sound. The amp in it is much better than the factory Explorer amp which I bypassed. I like the sound field and sound quality adjustability. This unit is good for us tweakers. EQ and crossover are welcome features. It has everything you would need and much more. The scrolling display shouldn't be a distraction to anybody. If so turn it off!

The only problem is that it has so many options, and does so much, that accessing it is a pain. I recommend familiarizing yourself with it BEFORE you hit the road. learning on the fly with this unit is dangerous and frustrating. This is what kept it from being great and getting that fifth star. Keep the manual handy because it will be awhile before all the functions and how to navigate become second nature.

I'm using an iPhone 3G with the bluetooth. Most people say they hear me clear. One said I sounded terrible. One said it sounded better than my Plantronics/Altec Lansing 903 Backbeat earphone headset. It all boils down to the noise level in your car. Quiet car good quality. The mic on the unit is good so it picks up the noise in a loud car especially in the rain. I haven't yet experimented with the mic gain level to see if it makes a difference.

So all-in-all it's a very good unit. All works as it should. It has loads of useful features and sounds great. In time the operation will be second nature and my only complaint will no longer be valid.

"Terrible Manual" 2009-10-19

I just got this unit today and spent twenty minutes sitting with the manual trying to figure it out. I'm halfway there. I sat down this afternoon with a highlighter and really studied the manual. I'm confident that, with another 20 or 30 minutes of set up in the car I'll be good to go.

It also has the dreaded "demo mode" which flashes all sorts of lights and useless information while your trying to set it up. Absolutely maddening! There's a way to turn that off. I'm going to try again tomorrow (page 8 at the very bottom of the list!).

It does have a lot of features, and once I'm set up, I'm sure I'll enjoy the unit. But right now I'm really wishing Apple would tackle the car audio market. I'd pay extra for something that didn't require a manual and a few hours to set up.

FYI "HD Radio Ready" with "Ready" in really small type underneath means this unit DOES NOT have an HD Radio tuner. Bummer.

"Not worth buying, bass lovers stay away!!" 2009-10-05

I bought this unit to replace the factory stereo in my 2006 Altima. I'm pretty decent with technology, but this unit was extremely difficult to use. The manual was horribly written and hard to understand, and on top of that, the manual was for 3 different Kenwood models, and you had to pay attention to the *'s next to every sentence to figure out which model the manual was actually talking about.

My BIGGEST COMPLAINT about this stereo, however, is not the extremely difficult to navigate interface, but rather the fact that there is NO SIMPLE BASS/TREBLE ADJUSTMENT feature. I searched the manual high and low for how to adjust the bass/treble, and even went back to Best Buy to have the guys who installed the stereo help me with it (The manual only has directions for the lower-priced models for how to make this adjustment). The guys who installed this stereo confirmed the fact that there is no way to adjust the bass/treble and said it was a more sophisticated technology than that. I find it RIDICULOUS that a stereo that costs this much wouldn't have such a simple feature. There is a "Bass Boost" feature, which is an ABSOLUTE JOKE (Sidenote: I am a bass lover, so if you aren't you can probably disregard my review). I usually turn my bass up almost as far as it goes and I cannot do that with this stereo. After using the factory stereo in my car for a long time now, I have gotten used to the bass and know the potential of the awesome speakers in my car. It is so frustrating to me that the sound quality is better with the Nissan factory stereo than with this expensive one.

Needless to say, I am returning this stereo today and am praying that Best Buy will take it back since it has only been a couple days since I bought it. Due to the horrible instructions, I doubt I will ever buy a Kenwood stereo ever again. I had purchased this unit in the first place because it seemed reasonably priced for the features it had (Bluetooth built-in, front USB and AUX, etc.) However, I'm willing to give up the built-in bluetooth for a stereo that actually can play the sound the way I want it.

BOTTTOM LINE: If you love bass DO NOT purchase this unit.

The radio feels like it's an analog tuner with a digital display of the channel. This would be fine, but the display doesn't quite match the channel playing, and it has a tendency to drift while driving down the road. There are no presets, so if you are tired of the current station, plan on having someone change the channel for you, or pull over, as watching the display to change channels is dangerous while driving.

The MP3 capabilities are great, and the ability to skip 10 songs at a time is a nice feature. It also has a search feature, but I haven't tested this.

If you mostly play MP3s or CDs, and are looking for a great value, buy this. If you listen to the radio more then casually, then look for another radio.

I bought this unit from Best Buy last year and put it in my 94 Camry XLE and it kicks my Pionner 6" 3-way speakers nice. I am installing my subs next week and I will update this once I get them hooked up. This is an easy install if you get the wiring harness and is awesome with the XPLOD setting on. The bad thing is it does get very hot but does not damage the unit or anything around it. AUX is a BIG bonus.

I wanted a replacement for my very old car stereo because it didn't have anyway of hooking up my iPod. The previous stereo was a very old Sony Explode, it worked great for many years but it was time to move on to better things.

And here I was back at Amazon for another Sony Explode. A great and simple removable faceplate with an AUX input (regular mini-jack) to connect my iPod. I also feel it gets much better radio reception/tunning and all in all it sounds great and loud enough for most people. I personally don't like to feel my entire car vibrate when listening to music, nor do I care to share my music with my entire neighborhood as I drive by.

So, check it out. It doesn't have all the amazing features you can find, but for the price it's great.

The Sony CDX-GT130 Car Stereo Receiver is fancy and "cool" looking right out of the box. The volume button is covered in a soft rubber, and therefore easy to adjust. The display looks nice at night, and good during the day. In really direct sunlight it may be hard to see the LCD screen, but otherwise its viewable at all times.

There's a good number of preset options for your radio, and lots of sound equalizers you can play with. Directions were good enough. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.

I got this for my old Ford pickup, and (apart from removing the old radio) installation was easy. I didn't have a harness converter, but the directions identified the wires well enough for me to make my own. One thing I would suggest that is not in the instructions is to reassemble the dashboard before inserting the support frame, as the black outside ring didn't fit the slot, but would have sat nicely on the face of the dashboard (I just left it off).

This is a great unit that sounds great. My only complaint is that while it reads CD text, it doesn't capture MP3 text from the radio (so you can see what song is playing). I might someday look for a model that does that.

I used to have free XM subscription, and I wasn't impressed with the sound quality

(not trying to flame XM, I understand XM is all about quantity of programs).

Then I read that HD Radio uses 96kbps compression, compare to 48kbps of XM.

I got the KTC-HR200 connected to DDX812 through the "5L" connector.

Sound quality is amazing, it is indeed near CD quality.

I get more bass and clearer treble. I can honestly say it is better than XM,

and it's waayyy better than analog FM, no more hiss and noise.

Unlike RDS where the text scrolls, KTC-HR200 and DDX812 displays title/artist/station-name constantly, it doesn't scroll.

Some stations carry more than 1 HD broadcasts, so there are more programs to listen to.

The negatives:

- I've had KTC-HR200 for 3 weeks now, and twice I got the memory presets lost issue

others reported. So it's NOT everytime I turned off/on the car.

- KTC-HR200 is huge! Dimension is (W/H/D): 6 1/2, 1 3/8, 4 5/16 inch.

Think of where you want to install it before you buy.

- The module gets hot even when the head unit plays something else (CD for example). How hot does it get? Adult can probably stand it, but I wouldn't want my 3 years old kid to touch it.

- The installation manual says "Do not install the unit near the dashboard, the rear deck, or other important components." I wonder if it's related to the "hot" issue above. It recommends you to install it on the carpet.

- It doesn't support iTune tagging.

- It takes about 4 to 6 second before it can lock onto the HD broadcast. During this time, you'll hear analog version of the broadcast. I'm not sure if this is HR200 issue or if it's a characteristic of every HD Radio receiver.

- If reception is bad, it fails to lock onto the HD broadcast. Or it may switch back and forth between analog FM and HD.

The improvement in sound quality far outweighs the negatives.

Especially if you listen a lot to classical or jazz programs,

you'll enjoy it much much more.

KTC-HR200, HD RADIO MODULE WILL NOT WORK WITH DNX5120 DUE TO EPROM ISSUES

KENWOOD'S WEBSITE DOESN'T MENTION THIS

Heads up to everybody. KTC-HR200 has problems where it resets to the factory settings every time the unit is restarted. This means that no presets will be saved and it'll reset back to 87.7 FM every time your car is turned on.

The resetting problem is DNX5120's problem not KTC-HR200. This problemetic EPROM is in DNX5120 and it can't be fixed through software update.

In other words, if we want HD Radio with DNX5120, we have to pull out our DNX5120, package it up, send it to Kenwood Service Center, and wait 2~3 weeks.

I've battled with Kenwood for weeks on this issue and I'm giving up at this point. I'll be returning my HR200 and live with non-digital radio.

"Replaced stock stereo in our 4runner" 2010-01-12

This is a great stereo that replaced the stock 2din cassette/cd player in our 2002 4runner. It worked out great and I did the install myself with a little reading online. It was a snap. I bought the Metra toyota harness and just crimped it to the JVC harness that attaches to the radio.

The stereo itself has a great layout, with large buttons for radio presets as well as a big volume knob. I hate these new modern stereos with no buttons for radio presets, it makes it very dangerous for driving and changing stations. Also the faceplate has a lot of display flashing but I turned it off because it was distracting and it makes it seem much more professional. The radio also comes preset on the LOUD setting which is unnecessary unless you're listening at very low volumes. This will cause your speakers to distort if you chose to crank the volume up.

Also one note, the picture in the description of this stereo is incorrect, it does not have a cassette, the correct picture is at the top left when you first click on the item. Amazon needs to correct this because I believe you can clearly see it says XG400.

I will be instealling a sub and new speakers soon, so maybe I will update this review then but it sounds great and is a definite improvement over the stock radio, especially being able to use the iPod through the aux cable connector instead of the tape player.

I bought this radio to replace my factory unit in my Chevy Silverado. I was tired of paying for XM Satellite Radio, and that was the only thing keeping me from replacing the factory unit anyway. I wanted a radio that supported HD, Mp3's and also offered a USB interface. The JVC KD-AHD59 does all of that and much more. I do not use the blue tooth functionality so I can't speak to it. However, I have been really pleased with everything else about the unit. It plays Cd's clearly with great sound and the support for mp3 files means I can now fit a ton of music on a single cd. You have to love having over 100 songs on a single cd! The USB interface is easily accessible from the front, and even has a small sliding cover to keep the dust out when not in use. You can plug your ipod directly into the USB port and control your music from the radio itself. The unit also has an auxiliary jack on the front for older mp3 players. The menu is a bit different from most I am used to, so you might check a few things in the manual at first. I found I had left the "Demo Mode" turned on for the first day. It is satellite ready in case you still want to use XM or Sirius. Personally I found the ability to use mp3 cd's, a USB thumb drive or my Ipod pretty much made satellite radio obsolete. I found the HD Radio to come in clear and get stations from over 40 miles away without any issues.

Bottom Line: The JVC KD-AHD59 radio offers a lot of bang for the buck. With numerous features, great sounding audio and plenty of ways to listen, the unit has been more than I hoped for. I am very happy with the unit.

This unit works great except the outgoing voice clarity. I bought this unit solely for the bluetooth feature and the ability to talk though the radio on my cell phone as I'm on the phone a lot in my car everyday. People have said that I sometimes sound like I'm in a tunnel or underwater but it's not everytime. The mic is located in the dash over the speedometer and behind the steering wheel so it's in a good location and I keep the phone 6" from the unit. Adjusted the volume and mic levels in both the unit and my cell phone without any change. Called the installer and JVC and they have no solutions. I had a Parrot before this and the clarity was fine but I didn't like the external unit and wanted something more integrated. If you plan to talk a lot on this, you may want to think twice before you buy.

The installation into my Porsche was a breeze. I was already using a JVC CD changer, which works flawlessly with this unit. The single dial interface is not a plus. It takes some getting used to, and is not as convenient as the conventional button and knob design. The sound is good and when I can tune into a HD station it's even better. The biggest complaint about the unit is its reception. The unit just doesn't pull in stations, HD or analog, very well. Driving in a city, it's great, but out of town, reception quality drops off quickly. I should note that the Porsche has its antenna integrated in the windshield. But the reception of the factory installed radio I was replacing was much better.

The Sony CDXGT640UI Receiver is a good receiver with easy to use functions. I purchased this to replace another Sony receiver (same model variety) from 2006 that got stolen. The USB port works well with ipods, USB memory sticks, and other MP3 player deceives. Like most car receivers, it's easy to install by following the directions packaged with the box.

PROS:

* Easy to Install

* Looks stylish

* External USB port works very well with IPOD, usb and other MP3 devices.

* IPOD search for song, artist etc works good.

* Auxilary inputs located in the back of the unit work well.

* Easy to remove faceplate

* Easy to adjust settings

CONS:

* Text/display is difficult to read in daylight.

* Display appears dim (even on the highest setting)

* Preset Buttons are very close together which may inadvertently gets pushed

* Seek Buttons have no texture or highly visible text on it, and so may take a second to realize their function, expecially when packed next to the ZAP, search, and equalizer setting buttons.

* There is a slight learning curve to understand all the features, and setting arrangements.

The fall down face plate that conceals the CD slot is the highlight of this product for me. The dim text display is the low point and is the number one reason why I would not purchase this again, but there are no other Sony options with the same look and features all in one.

Overall, I would purchase this unit again for the look of it and if its priced under $120 (which is what I paid for it through Amazon).

This is an excellent product. This is my second Clarion CD player. The feature to change the filters of the highs and lows is great. I have two amps that run from this unit. I don't know how the built in amp is because i use an amp for my speakers and another for the subs. I bought this for the features to change the sound filters and subwoofer volume. The built in ipod control is great except when you want to scroll through the artist you have to press the down button too many times. If you know how to use all of the features, then this product is great. Don't get this unless you need all of the features.

I recently got a used car and the radio was trashed so I had to replace it. (Approx cost $159 for decent unit)

I HATE the whole blue tooth headset thing because I always forget it or forget to charge it but I needed a new headset. (Approx Cost $60 for moderate unit or $129 for Jawbone)

I also wanted to be able to control my iPod from my stereo.

(Approx cost for iPod stereo module is $75)

The Clarion CZ509 seemed to be the logical choice as it would cost over $290 separately to accomplish what I wanted plus I would not have to worry about remembering to bring or charge that stupid headset!

Installation of the CZ509 cost me $40 plus another $50 for the dash kit, wire harness and antenna adapter bringing my total up to $269.

The blue tooth is GREAT, sound is good and the INCLUDED External Mic really makes it work better than those stereos that have it on the faceplate.

iPod control is good and it charges your iPod while it is connected so you NEVER have to worry about it having a dead battery.

Now the bad.

The manual is obviously translated from another language to English as some things don't have the correct usage or tense.

Some of the features are difficult program like syncing your phonebook with the CZ509 and you almost need a 2nd pair of hands to accomplish these tasks.

For some reason, the AM band does not work well which really sucks if you are trying to listen to traffic radio.

I am pleased with the CZ509 and would recommend.

"Nice but Not Worth the $$" 2010-01-21

I bought this unit for the HD-Radio, the HD Radio tagging, and the ipod control.

HD-Radio: It works 'alrite' takes about 5 seconds to establish the signal, then will cut in and out at least 2 times per song. I guess it sounds better than normal radio, but I cant tell the difference.

HD-Radio Tagging: Well I guess it was my fault for making assumptions, but my video ipod is not capable of itunes tagging, which is really one of the top reasons i bought this unit. So its either but a new ipod, or get over it (im starting to get over it)

iPod Control: This works pretty well. It is nice to be able to go through the playlists and see the songs.

The unit as a whole: It is very difficult to use while driving. Rather than the right knob turning to change the stations or song, u need to click it to the right or left, which is somewhat difficult to do while driving. Also, you never realize how much you like having those number 1-6 preset buttons on the front of your radio until you no longer have them. Searching for even a saved radio station is a hassle. and for some reason, when you do save a station in the preset menu, it doesnt say what the station that you saved is. It still just says "Preset 1, Preset 2...ect" rather than "96.5-1, 98.9-2...etc" which i think would be a logical move.

My bottom line: This is not worth the money. I bought a Kenwood specifically because of past Kenwood HU's ive had, They last forever and work well. Im not doubting that this will last for a while, but since its so difficult to use, I regret buying it.

I've had Kenwoods in the past, and liked their sound. This one, though, is EXTRAORDINARILY frustrating to use. The controls feel rubbery, and there's little consistency in what pushing or tipping the knob on the right actually does in different scenarios. I haven't adjusted the time for DST because I can't figure out how (yeah, I COULD go dig for the manual). I set the stations once, but had to use the manual to do that....SO not intuitive.

Every function you use launches the display into a cutesy but IRRITATING 3 to 5 second goofy animated display.

The knob on the right is used for pretty much everything but volume, but it's really difficult to work it while driving as it's not very precise.

The Bluetooth is nearly unusable. I can hear OK, but nobody else seems to be able to hear me. Yes, it was professionally installed. Same shop put an Alpine in another car of mine (Bluetooth works great there) and a Parrot standalone Bluetooth in another (also very clear).

The display is essentially invisible during the day, even without direct sunlight on it. I live in Oregon, so direct sunlight isn't normally a problem :-), especially in winter.

At night, the display shows "DOWNLOADING" most of the time, while more interesting info like the station or artist or title scrolls by a few letters at a time. I have no idea what it's downloading but it never seems to finish.

I'll buy a Kenwood again, but not one with this style controls or user interface. And definitely I'll check on reviews of the Bluetooth performance before buying next time.

"Good Unit with Some Flaws" 2009-12-22

PLEASE NOTE: If you want to use the iPod dock with this unit and are using an iPhone or iPod touch with 3.0 firmware. It will not work. You must use 2.2.1 or lower for the deck to correctly recognize the directories.

This is a great unit other than the above comment. I chose this one because it had everything I wanted in a deck for a pretty good price. The HD radio is nice and clear, but please note because of the issues with HD radio propagation in general if you're having static with an analog AM/FM radio station you will have many issues with receiving that station in HD. The AM news station I listen to is 1000x better with HD radio same with my FM top 40 station, but if it's a cloudy day it's dodgy. So, all of the people who complain that the deck doesn't receive good HD radio are misled. It's not the deck's fault; it's the station's fault. They need to have higher output transmitters.

Problems I have with the deck are: that the screen is very reflective so I often find myself holding my hand in front of it to shield the screen to see it. Also, there's no one touch memory for radio stations. It's also very cumbersome navigating the iPod controls from the deck.

After all the bashing here's what I love. I love the deck's ability to run EQ for different inputs including a different eq setting depending on if it's AM or FM. I also dig the spectrum analyzer on the deck. The best part of it is it has a great sound. I'm using stock speakers and amp that came with my Ranger. It sounds tons better from the Alpine deck I had previously.

In short:

Would I recommend this deck. Yes highly, this is still in my opinion and research the best deck out there with built-in HD radio and iPod docking even with it's flaws.

Okay, I think I've figured out what some of the folks here have been griping about...and I disagree with most of it, though not all.

First of all, to say this unit is "feature-packed" is like saying the U.S. Federal Deficit is large. I mean, this thing has features the typical consumer is never going to use. And all those features coupled with a spartan onboard control panel is the main reason so many people here think it's "too hard to use." It's really not. But it IS difficult to LEARN to use; once you've figured it out (it took me one day, but I'm pretty smart), it's not bad from there.

To exacerbate things, this thing comes with what has to be one of the worst user manuals I've ever seen for a name-brand electronics product. I mean, I understand if you're buying some off-brand made-in-Taiwan gadget, you're going to get a manual written in "Engrish." But c'mon, this is KENWOOD, one of the most popular brands going!

The manual was written by, putting it mildly, someone whose first language is NOT English. For the most part it's just annoying, if mildly amusing, but there are parts where you have no idea what the writer is trying to say. Couple that with its leaving out a lot of pertinent information - or at least making you dig hard for it - and it's no wonder some users throw up their hands with this unit.

For instance, it isn't clear at all from the manual that you have THREE FM selection groups. While it would be obvious from your typical control panel (which would have an AM-FM1-FM2-FM3 button so labeled), there's no way to tell this from just looking at the blank face of this unit.

The secret to learning how to use and enjoy your KDC-HD942U receiver is THE REMOTE CONTROL. Think of it the same way that you think of almost all consumer electronics for the home nowadays: without the remote, you're screwed. Most DVD/Blu-Ray players, for instance, are nearly impossible to use without the remote. My DirecTV receiver is certainly that way.

You would never think it, but you're now in the same boat with your car stereo. Now, why they would give you an UNLIGHTED remote for this I'll never know, but there you are. You really can't use this thing very efficiently without the remote, and that's just the plain truth of it. You can try to navigate through the menus on the unit, but for the most frequently-used functions you're going to get frustrated. Use the remote.

By the way, with all the hoopla about "texting while driving," could frequent use of a remote control for your car stereo be more hazardous? Talk about your distracted driving.

At any rate I'll probably add more to this review as I get more experience with the unit. I'm giving it four stars because it really is impressive, if a bit intimidating.

"Surprisingly nice for the price" 2010-01-24

Just installed one of these today in my car. My initial impressions are very positive for this head unit. It accepts digital music stored on iPods, SD cards, USB devices, or played through the AUX inputs (one headphone jack on the front, and an AUX input on the back). In short, all of the MODERN methods of connectivity somebody needs. It does have AM/FM radio reception, but no CD or cassette.

Installation itself was pretty straightforward (my car is pretty basic). One thing to note is that like most (all?) aftermarket head units, this one comes with a sleeve that you install in your car first. You then slide the unit into the sleeve, which locks it in place. The fit between the unit and the sleeve was a little loose, allowing the unit to move around a small bit, possibly enough to cause a rattle while driving. I ended up adding some shims to tighten things up.

Basic controls are well-designed and logical...it takes very little time to figure out how to do all of the important things. The included remote control, however, is another story. Gaudy color, way too many buttons, poorly laid out. I'm leaving it in the box.

Sound quality is surprisingly good. I have a basic four speaker system (with pretty good Infinity speakers), and good quality MP3s sounded way better than I expected. The difference between really good MP3s and lower quality ones was apparent though. It's a kind of double-edged sword you get with really good audio playback, and something to keep in mind when crafting a library for the 750DI to play.

I put a few hundred songs on a 2GB SD card, stuck it in the player, and it immediately recognized the card and started playing tunes. Scrolling display shows title and artist, and you can have the unit play songs at random. When you shut off the unit, it remembers its place in the song you were playing last, and picks up exactly where it left off when you power it back up. Nice!

We also plugged an iPod into the unit using the pop-out dock..a nifty feature that's not quite as nice as it could be. You need to install one of the eight included iPod dock adapters for your specific model iPod, but you can't close the pop-out dock with the adapter installed. The adapter also hooks into two slots in the top edge of the 750DI's faceplate..something to keep in mind when installing the unit in your car. On the plus side, the dock & adapter hold the iPod quite securely. You can select music using the iPod's controls, or from some buttons on the 750DI. My wife has a Scion xD with built-in iPod compatibility, and she finds the 750DI's iPod capabilities much nicer and easier to use. iPod adapters included with the unit specifically mention support for the iPod Mini, 5th gen video iPod (30GB), iPod Classic (80/120GB), 1st gen iPod Touch, and the 1st-4th generation iPod Nano.

For the price, it's hard to not like this unit. Boss seems to understand that CDs are obsolete...something a lot of manufacturers don't seem to get. Not much they can do about the iPod adapter issue (unless they made a double-DIN unit), but if they put a better remote in the box, and tweak the installation fit, the 750DI would be darn near perfect. And for $100 each, they'd sell like crazy.

I purchased this to replace a single DIN Alpine unit in my 1999 Maxima. I never liked the single DIN look of the Alpine over the stock BOSE system that my car came with. It's great to go back to the double DIN look. I was able to get the lighting of the Clarion to exactly match the stock greenish/blue lighting. The understated styling of this unit give it a stock look in my car.

I am extremely satisfied with the Clarion. The FM tuner is so much better than the tuner in the Alpine. I absolutely love the ability to play MP3's from a USB thumb drive. I don't have a bluetooth phone so I can't comment on that. The CD player works great. There are a lot of sound customizing options. I also like the ability to use the units high/low pass filters to keep the bass out of my main speakers and divert the bass to my sub. Overall, the Clarion does a great service to high quality recordings.

I use the ISR button to change back and forth between my favorite radio station and the USB card. A great idea!

I was a first time car stereo installer and I'm so excited because I got everything to work. I mainly bought this so I could use the USB feature, but there's so much else that I didn't know about. The A2DP is a great thing. That's brand new technology. With that and a data plan I can stream Pandora Radio from my iPhone. It even charges my iPhone 2G so I never have to worry about the battery dying. It sounds better than the source unit (I have a 2007 Xterra) and I'm so impressed by the many functions. Can't wait to use the bluetooth and the included microphone with my cellular.

The only part of the installation for me that was tricky was getting the different colored wires too match up, but I was able to follow the installation instructions included, and those for a wire harness that I purchased separately. All in all I got much improved sound and all these new functions and I couldn't be happier.

I've had mine for two weeks and have really learned to like it. Unfortunately, it does not have a way to initiate voice dialing from the head unit. As a consolation prize, it is pretty straightforward to transfer my phonebook from my phone (Note - I use the 'selected categories only' option from my Blackberry so I only transfer over about a dozen. Any more than that and it gets tedious scrolling through the entries - and dangerous.)

Pros:

Nice double din size to fill the dashboard

Can change display color - more fun than I expected

Bluetooth telephone and Bluetooth audio work great

USB connector from rear of unit allows iPod to be stored in glove compartment.

ISR Button allows 1 button to select favorite radio station

Can enter radion station names into headunit.

Navigation through the Bluetooth Phonebook and iPod Playlist is easy.

Incoming Bluetooth phone calls will activate the unit even when it is in 'off' mode (note - car has to be running or in ACC mode).

Cons:

Can't initiate voice dial from head unit

Also another quirk is that if I initiate voice dial from phone, subsequent voice dial attempts are muted. Voice dial still works, but you can't hear the prompts (Resets itself next time you get in the car.) Odd, but consistent.

If Bluetooth Audio is set to autoconnect, then the unit will automatically switch to it as the source when you start your car. If you were listening to the radio and stop your car and get out, when you get back in a start the car, you will hear the radio for about 5 seconds, then the Bluetooth audio will connect and automatically switch over. Again, odd but consistent.

Display screen is execellent when viewed straight on and loses contrast when viewed from angle. Driver and front seat passenger generally have an angled view that can make the display difficult to read depending on your car/seating/dash configuration.

I would definitely buy this unit again. Sound is great. Bluetooth is easy and reliable. If voice dialing could be initiated from the headunit, this would be a 5 star system.

The only problem I've had with this head unit is that I've so far been unsuccessful trying to pair it with my T-Mobile MyTouch. I go through the pairing process and the phone ends up thinking its paired but the stereo doesn't. I didn't have any problems pairing my previous phone, an old Nokia 6600. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the MyTouch or this head unit.

Otherwise, I'm happy with this head unit. I replaced the stock 6 disc changer unit in my car with this one. I can fit far more than 6 discs worth of music in MP3 format onto a USB drive, so I don't feel like I've lost any functionality there and it's much more convenient to copy files to a USB drive than it is burning new CDs.

One problem I had with the USB functionality is that it seemed like it played back the files in arbitrary order. Once I looked into it more, it seems like the unit only looks at the first few characters of the filenames to figure out how to sort them. If the track number isn't in those first few characters, then the music won't play back in the right order. If you rename your MP3 files so that the track number is the first thing in the filename, they will play back correctly in this head unit. Playback order isn't generally a big deal unless you're playing an album where the tracks fade into each other, in which case it can be annoying if they don't play back in the right sequence. I haven't tried playing back a MP3 CD yet so I don't know if this behavior is specific to USB devices.

The ability the change colors is nice. I've found a combination that almost exactly matches the rest of the interior lighting in my Subaru. Now if only I could change the color of the faceplate so easily so it matched my silver dash...

I don't have any complaints on sound quality or radio reception.

The Clarion CX609 is a reasonably priced 2-DIN receiver with lots of audio source options. I wasn't into spending $500+ for something with a touch screen, but still wanted a unit that could interface with my iPod and would provide hands-free use of my iPhone via bluetooth. The CX609 fits this bill well. Installation in my Toyota Land Cruiser was straightforward and I've been very impressed with the sound quality compared to the OEM unit. It did take a while to figure out how to get the CX609 to pair correctly with my iPhone 3G, mostly due to the poorly worded user manual (definitely written by someone for which English was not their native language); hence four instead of five stars. Eventually I found a product bulletin on the Clarion web site that describes device pairing in good English. Note that at least for the iPhone you want to use the WAIT method of pairing. Pairing also allows the iPod portion of my iPhone to stream audio via bluetooth. So now I just hop in the truck and turn the key and my music picks up right where it left off. And if I'm going on a longer trip, I plug my iPod Classic in via the USB cable and I've got plenty of tunes and audio books for the ride.

changer works very well, sound quality is excellent, and no problems with bumpy roads. the only issues i have are in the mounting and installing new cds. i removed an older sony cd changer and found that the mounting pattern is completely different. standardized patterns or an adapter plate would be nice. i had to make wooden spacer blocks and install between the panel and body. also the cd holders are very flimsy and awkward to use. a minor point, the holders are not numbered and the play sequence is back to front. i would recomend this unit to be used with a sony deck. the xplode technology does make a difference.

I bought this to go with my MEX-BT3700U head unit and it works great. Hung it from the front seat springs as the cab of my truck is quite limited. If you need a unit that works with any head unit (FM modulation) this is not it as it is designed to work with Sony head units, so do your research and you won't end up like the moron in the other review. I make compilation CDs of several albums converted to MP3 and recorded onto one disc. I have 6 Yes albums on 1 CD, 5 Kansas, 7 Genesis, etc. and this allows me to carry a ton of music in the car on just a few discs. I wish it played .wav files like the head unit, but I'm more than satisfied with it.

I purchased the BOSS 506CA from ANTonline, through Amazon.com. As soon as I had it installed. I noticed that the stations had so much static, that I couldn't hear the station. The stations would also jump ramdomley and I had to constantly change the time on the clock. When I contacted ANTonline, they refused to honor the warranty, saying that one of the reason being, that the product was already installed. Dah! How would anyone know if it works unless it was installed. Bad product and bad customer service on the behalf of ANTonline.

This thing looked great in the picture, but when I opened the box it looked very cheap. Its radio is old school analog radio, tuner and volume controls are potentiometer based. Spring based cheap plastic switches. It looked and felt so cheap that I was turned down just by holding it into my hands for 5 minutes. Its true that you can't expect much for $20 (the price I paid for it), but I thought that they can make it cheap because it does not have a CD drive, only SD card and USB key ports. If you keep looking for a deal, you can get a pioneer stereo for $50 or $60, this thing is definitely not worth spending your money at whatever price. I feel dissatisfied even at $20, I am not sure who would buy this at its regular price.

This radio has good FM radio reception. Even with no antenna it picks up more than my home stereo does with an antenna. The SD card reader plays MP3's great from my 8GB Micro SD with adapter. I've tried VBR, and Set Bit rate MP3's of different types, and everything has played fine.

The unit is light weight and generally seems cheap.

It has stereo speaker outputs, and both speakers share a common wire with ground. The built in wires are tiny gauge and cheap. This unit doesn't do 200 watts of anything. If you tried to run 200 watts of power through this it would definitely melt your wires... debate-ably before you could blow the amp.

The USB port did not recognize the micro SD to USB adapter I had.

I am using this as a lightweight FM radio / MP3 player in my house, and powering it with a deep cycle battery hooked to a solar panel. It works great so far, and sounds better than I expected.

I like that there is a 1/8" front line in on it so you can connect your phone or other mp3 player though it.

If you're expecting a high quality rugged stereo that will power anything larger than a pair of 6x9 speakers... You will be very disappointed. If you are looking for an inexpensive light weight unit to play FM / MP3 through a pair of small speakers... Well this is a bargain.

This Kenwood was a geat eyecatcher for me. First off it had MULTI COLOR ILLUMINATION!!!!. Which was a big thing for me because i was not a big fan of trading out my old head unit for a new one because i thouhgt all the other ones had cheesy colors and a cheesy aftermarket design. I do agree the interface was a little hard to use but if u get used to it, it kind of grows on you. But all the features of this headunit overshadow the interface problems. Sound quality i thouhgt was GREAT. I did not want a head unit just yet with bluetooth and HD radio because i did not want to pay for it. This has a added option so u can add these items like bluetooth reciever and hd reciever. I thought that was awesome. Also i was installing this in a muscle car and the double knobs really brought me back to the old radios that they put in the muscle cars of the 60's and 70's. Overall this head unit did everything THAT I WANTED IT TO DO.Hope this helps

This is one of the greatest head units I ever came across. The sound quality is excellent and you get the response you are looking for when you adjust the Equalizer setting. You also have the option to use the Built in DSP or to by pass it, there are also preset equalizer settings to chose from if you are in a hurry to get a right setting. The display can be changed in a number of ways to suit your needs, so to can the color of the display. The sound quality from USB flash drives or External Hard drives as well as the ipods, are also excellent. The content on these devices loads almost instantly, so you don't have to wait a period of time before you start to hear your music. All in all, you only realize the through beauty and performance of this unit when you start to use it. I have no regrets with this product and i would recommend it to anyone who wants quality for their money. My review on this product, 5 stars all the way.

I've been using this unit for about 10 days, here's what I think of it:

PROS:

1) Sound Quality!!!

2) The design and aesthetics. This unit is absolutely stunning and beautiful to look at. I love glancing at it when I'm driving.

3) Good customization options--especially for the colors and display.

4) USB is in the back. I am so glad about this. I plan on buying a massive USB stick and hardly changing it out. I ran the USB wire to my glove compartment and I don't have to mess with it. It is also out of sight for any thieves. It would of sucked if it was in the front.

5) The lights and colors! I know I already said this in #2, but I can't get over how cool this looks at night when it's lite up.

6) Build Quality.

7) Kenwood Support. Got my email answered in one day on a Saturday!

8) Customizable EQ, you are not stuck with presets if you don't want them.

Cons:

1) Volume decrease/increase is to fine. Wish it changed on a greater increment. But this is minor.

2) It's really hard to push in on the right knob to make it click. It has to be a perfect horizontal 180 degrees, or it doesn't register as an inward click

3) Ipod mode has more functions then USB mode. Why? IE: change the scrolling increment for songs/albums.

*4) This is the big one, the USB mode interface needs work and more functionality! Here's what I mean:

a) The thing I use most on this unit is the USB mode. It is really hard to navigate through the songs. There is a 'search mode' which make it easier to see what your searching for, but it is not on by default. you have to enable it every time you want to use it and it turns off as soon as you choose your song. Without search mode, it's difficult to see what songs/albums your navigating through.

d) THERE'S NO SHUFFLE FOR ROOT DIR. MUSIC(USB Mode)! There is a shuffle but only on the level per an album, but if you want to shuffle through all your songs and albums...you can not..unless you want all your songs in the root directory.

5) It's really a pain to switch radio stations. You can mark your favorite radio stations and turn the right dial to get to them...which is good. What is bad is, you first have to turn the knob, then turn it again to the favorite radio station you wanted, then click the knob inward to choose the radio station. What couldn't Kenwood make it to where you could just turn the knob and it would instantly go to the next favorite radio station?

The remote helps.

In summary, I love looking at this unit. I love hearing music from this unit. I wish the USB mode had the search function permanently on and even more functionality for USB mode. I am hoping Kenwood will release a firmware upgrade to make this happen.

I'm certainly not going to try to rebut every comment in the first review, because some things are purely subjective. This brief review will describe why I like this unit.

First, for me sound quality is 50% of the whole equation. Overall the sound is a 9.5 out of 10. Also, you can directly control the EQ settings by using Manual mode. You are NOT stuck with only a collection of presets as the previous reviewer implied. For me, once I set the overall EQ settings, I never fiddle around with individual bass and treble settings.

Second, the unit is dead quiet. I got mine installed at a professional car stereo place, one that has been in business for 50 years.

Third, it does take about 15 seconds to initialize the IPod unit, not all that unreasonable in my view.

Finally, for a unit like this that has, say 100+ settings (and very limited buttons) the user interface is CRITICAL. Unlike the other reviewer I have had no problems navigating the right-side control button (and I have very large fingers). It will take a bit of time to get used to how to navigate through the various settings. However, once you do I think the overall interface is just fine (borderline excellent).

The only reason I'm not giving this unit 5 stars is that the preset buttons (for both radio and Sirius stations) require at least two operations to move around. The "Favorites" settings help, but you only get 6 setting for all modes. I've seen better, but it's not enough to contain my overall enthusiasm for this unit.

** Update ** After using this unit for two weeks, I'm upgrading my review to 5 stars. The remote gives instant and easy access to any preset in the Sirius or AF/FM mode. Since you can have 6 presets per Sirius bank (there are four), navigation is as easy as can be.

First, I'll discuss my issues with the head unit, then move onto the thievery of the supplier Car Toys. The new Kenwood kdc-x693 has great sound quality, especially at high volumes, but that's about it. The user interface is so hard to use, especially while driving. The right side button is ridiculous, you have to press it in directly in the middle without pressing it slightly in any up, down, left, or right direction or else you will select the wrong thing. The unit makes an awful lot of static noise thru the speakers. The ipod feature takes a good 20 seconds to start working once the car is started, it just says "Reading" for what seems like forever, which sucks because I paid an extra $30 for their so-called "hi-speed" ipod cable. Treble and mids cannot be adjusted seperately (at least not easily and quickly), you just have to choose between the preset eq's. Overall, a huge disappointment. So i tried exchanging the poor unit with Car Toys for another brand cd player, one that was going to cost me more money, but they told me that there policy was no returns or exchanges on kenwood units. After fighting with the customer service rep, as this was stated nowhere on amazon when i purchased it, i was told a manager would contact me later, at his convenience. A day later I got a call back from the same rep, saying he spoke with his manager and had great news! They would exchange my unit and cable for another unit, but were going to charge me a mere 25% restocking fee! This equates to approximately $60!!! Should have bought from crutchfield....So now i'm stuck with a crummy unit from a lying, thieving company. Purchasers beware.....

Bought this after my Nakamichi CD 45z finally died (CD Laser) after 9 years in my Toyota truck. Installed this unit then tried feverishly to fiddle with the Parametric EQ and still didn't cut it. Finally returned to Amazon.com and picked up a Nakamichi CD 400. Paired with my 20 year old a/d/s 320i speakers and Nakamichi PA 300II amp, it sounds awesome from jazz to rock. Cranked up, the Sony made my wife's and my ears ache but with the Nak, it doesn't as pure clean sound comes through. Sorry Sony, the Nakamichi is a better unit hands down.

Have just installed the receiver and it works well and provides the customer with noteworthy features.

The main flaw created by the Sony design team is that a very annoying alarm in the form of a series of beeps occurs whenever one turns off the car's engine. The purpose is to warn the driver that the front panel of the receiver has not been removed. I contacted Sony and there is no way to disable the alarm.

Sony, this alarm should have been a FEATURE CONTROLLED BY THE CONSUMER, not Sony. The design team, and the approving managers, were way off base with this and hints at a lack of customer service and appreciation.

cons:

as is, cannot turn off faceplate warning beep when ignition turned off.

pros:

radio stations sound better than stock radio.

for mp3s, lists artist, album, song, folder #, song #, time playing.

2gb usb loads fast; within a few seconds playing music.

can shuffle full usb device or just a folder.

eh:

menu navigation not too bad - for a radio.

control knob takes some getting used to.

control knob is fairly stiff so few accidental selections.

faceplate warning beep:

when the ignition is turned off, 5 seconds later, the radio emits 2 beeps, 3 times, through the speakers - every time; very annoying.

the beeps are supposed to remind you to take your precious faceplate out of your vehicle.

while you can turn off the menu/knob beeps, this sony 'feature' can not be turned off.

you can buy/install an external amplifier to turn off the annoying beep.

or you can buy/install a relay between the ignition wire and ground of speakers to turn the speakers off - search the 'interweb'

Great unit for the price, my previous pioneer unit went bad, decided to give this one a try, unit works excellent, the only thing that i dont like is that in bright daylight the faceplate can be real shiny under direct sunlight, wich bothers the eyes. not a problem if you have tinted windows.

the pioneer with the OLED screen didnt have this problem. Besides that this unit is excellent!

i have had this stereo for almost 2 years now and it is easily the best stereo i have ever had, it really loud and clear, and just easy to use. i would reccomend this stereo to anyone, the only problem i had is that now it had some sort of an electrical malfunction; causing the remote start to no longer work and causing it to drain my battery whenever the car is off. but i like this stereo so much that i am going to buy another one.

I got this unit because I saw XDVD8130 and said to myself, "I don't need a DVD player in my car", As cool as it was I wanted an MP3 disc player and found this.

This unit is packed with a lot-O stuff!

I haven't tried the Bluetooth yet because I need buy the module separate, but answering and placing calls through the stereo and speakers is cool hands down! b(^-^)d

(UPDATE!) I got the BT60 for this. It works quite well and calls are very clear on both ends. Just connect the add-on turn the radio on, pair with your phone and then every time you turn on the radio the bluetooth will connect. Place or receive calls through 2-4 speakers. The only place where this lacks is that you have to activate voice-dail on the phone, the number pad on the remote only goes from 1-6???, and dailing a number from the face plate is not fluid.

The remote is very handy with 90% of full unit command...Ok, maybe 95%.

I love the accessories on this unit, 3 pair-O RCA out, f,r,sub Audio in and Ipod in...niiiice (^-^)

This unit is really, REALLY easy to install, I put it in before my half hour break was up.

When opened, the display will greet you with good morning or what ever, but it's a tad obstructed by the face and in the day you may get glare, the glare could be remedied easy though. This unit looks busy from the images but when you get it in your hand its very tame and spell't out especially after reading the instruction book.

My only real concern is the installation and removal of the face. It's a bit awkward. You cannot just slide or simply clip in and go with this and removing is just grab and pull down...! I can see in a few years this wearing out and or breaking. I would rather a clip in and push button release system. Otherwise, the controls on the faceplate kinda remindes me of a cross between a DJ turntable and a game controller. The knobs on the right and left are like mini analog sticks like on a PS2 control.

The sound that this unit puts out is crisp as your speakers can handle. When you connect and activate the subwoofer option it will cause bass boom that shake the crumbs out of you carpet and seats... So I adjust that to level 1 because it will start at 6.

It easily goes from one type of disk to another without a hiccup and even select up to 150 MP3 tracks and FOLDERS!?! SOOOOO HOTTTT

I had a little problem shortly after installing this where it wouldn't skip to the next track on a regular CD... BUT! I called Dual, described my problem the person knew just what was wrong and had me power reset the unit then eveything was fine.

This is a great unit for the price for all it does.

Waited a long time to get a receiver with all the new features (USB, iPOD, multi file support, etc.) available to the car stereo market but the wait was worth it. The receiver has worked flawlessly for the past month that I've owned it. Feature packed and well constructed, I would recommend to anyone looking for an advanced receiver.

The only issue has been in the availability of the remote (MW1), which is still at the time of this review not available. This has proven to be a real hassle and a source of frustration. It would have been nice if Clarion would have made everything available at the time of release and BEFORE the start of boating season.

I bought this model for its two USB ports and I'm glad I did! The 1st USB is easy access, being that it's on the front of the receiver. The 2nd comes from the rear of the deck and runs w/ extension to a place of your choosing. I had mine flush mounted to the inside of my glovebox (perfect for my thumb drive)! This receiver is easy to navigate and lacks in no department except for bluetooth (is compatible though). Comes with an easy to memorize remote and USB IPOD cable too! Highly rec. buying Premier series as they come with a 2 year warranty opposed to the stock one year with other head units. Personally I didn't care about having Full OEL DOT or LCD. I was told LCD is prefered by more, but I'm not watching TV on my head unit so... Overly satisfied with this unit and rec. to everyone!

"Multi-Function Button Frustration" 2009-09-20

I had this unit installed professionally along with an Alpine MRPF300 Crossover Amp and TSC720PRS Premier Component Speakers. I have to say I am very happy with this system. When I first started using it, I knew I would need to work my way thru the instruction manual. First time users of an iPod compatible tuner will be naturally overwhelmed. The iPod hookup creates an exponentially complicated range of choices that before the iPod came along were not needed. However, after several months of use, I can say the iPod interface is very user friendly. The screen is easy to read except when it is sunny. The display face is made of shiny plastic and it reflects everything when the sun is shining making it very difficult to read. The sound is clear and powerful but to change the equalizer, you will need to pull the car over. I honestly think the iPod MP3's sound better than the CD player. I have no idea how they accomplished that. There is really no need for a CD player. The radio reception is very clear and seems to capture more stations with better reception.

My greatest criticism of this unit lies in the multi-function button. The pause function is really a cruel joke. To use it, you need to configure from the menu options the ability to pause the iPod or the CD player. Even with the correct configuration, you need to hit the Multi-Function button in the center three times. This may sound simple but it is not. There are two problems with this function. One there is a delay when you hit this button AND two, you have a 50% chance at best of hitting the button in the center the first time. To pause the unit, stay away from this procedure and just turn the tuner off! It is much easier to turn the unit off than go thru the nonsense of hitting the multi-function button in the center three to six times.

Even with these design deficiencies, I am willing to give this product a four star rating. The sound and use of the iPod pushes it from a three star to a four star rating.

At first I wanted an Alpine then found out that you needed to spend around 5 hundred extra to get a 7 band Eq. Then you needed a laptop on top of that to tune in the fancy Eq in your car. What a load of bull that was. Keenwood was my second choice and the same situation reared its ugly head. After carefully researching the competion I went with Premier by Pioneer. Clearly the best headunits with everything built right into the unit and no extra dollars need to be spent on an Eq. system. More bang for the buck and in todays times that is what I am looking for. Sorry Alpine, Kenwood you are not catering towards the working man who needs to save a little $ here and there. Premier is the only way to go in my book!

CNET did a good review for first impressions. Once you have the unit for a while you realize its not all its cracked up to be.

Had mine for about 6 months now. Gripes-

#1-every time you start the car and push the nav button it says its not linked and takes 2 minutes to link to the GPS satellite(I just sit there)

#2-I burned an MP3 cd and put it in. It played fine but for some reason rendered the buttons a heavy 30 second lag. So I tried to turn the volume up-nothing. Tapped a couple more times-nothing. Then 20 seconds later volume maxes out and I have to stop in traffic with my wife to shut the car off-volume maxed out. Needless to say I won't play an MP3 CD ever again.

#3-There are colored lines on the 2D map-seem to be some kind of history. I've played with all settings-advanced and basic-and can't get them to go away. Sometimes they don't even follow road-just go from source to destination-covering the real streets I need to see.

I called Eclipse about #1 and the guy said "We're making a firmware update for that-be looking for it in a few weeks". That was 4 months ago.

I paid about $1600 for this unit from Crutchfield 6 months ago-today I get an email-Crutchfield has it for $780. Don't wonder why.

Adage-don't but the biggest, best, and baddest-it hasn't been tried and tested yet. [expensive] Lesson learned.

possibly worth the $770 Amazon wants for it if you can deal with #1-#3.

12/7/2009 - I have recently installed the AVN726E in my car. I am pleased with the unit with one exception. Eclipse claims the unit supports "hands free operations" for using Bluetooth cell phone capabilities, however, it does not support voice commands. This means you must take your eyes off the road to type in a telephone number or if you are able to download your phone book from your cell phone you must once again take your eyes off the road to find the person/number in the phone book and select that individual then make your call. Prior to purchasing this unit I had a simple $69 hands free unit on my sun visor which allowed me to simply press the call button on my phone then give a voice command to call a person listed in my phone book and talk without taking my eyes off the road. I think Eclipse missed the mark on their "hands free operation" claims for such a simple technology and for the expense of the unit.

"Great improvement over the previous AVN units" 2009-10-30

After extensive research into the best GPS double-DIN unit for my F150, I narrowed the search to the Kenwood DNX9140 and the Eclipse AVN726E. I had the AVN5500 in my old car, so I was aware of the numerous strengths and weaknesses of the Eclipse product. Truth be told, I'm not a huge fan of the 5500. The video integration is great, but it leaves a LOT to be desired with regards to the GPS and iPod playback. Ergo, I was open to the AVN726E, but extremely skeptical after my previous disappointment. After reading the specs on the new unit, though, I was convinced that the 726E was exactly what I was looking for! (It should be noted that I never actually messed around with the DNX9140. It was another late-model high-end double-DIN that got equally great reviews, but I settled on the 726E after learning about the product improvements).

The following is a laundry list of reasons why I am so satisfied with this new unit (in no particular order):

1) Navigation is now a hard drive-driven application. In the 5500, a map DVD was necessary. The hard drive format works much better. First off, it is much faster to load and seems more efficient. Additionally, I don't have to worry about scratching or losing the disc (a $300 replacement). Updates to the map are performed via SD card behind the faceplate. Lastly, I now have the ability to keep a movie in the DVD slot while using the GPS.

2) The GPS is a bajillion times better in the 726E. For such a high-end product, the 5500 had some glaringly obvious flaws in the GPS platform. For instance, you weren't able to search by zip code and POI look-up was atrocious. You couldn't perform a blind search of restaurants or gas stations. Instead, you had to input the specific name of the POI and the unit would then find the closest match. It was ridiculous. The 726E has made vast improvements in this regard. Zip code search is quick and easy. The POI search is also great. It's similar to the Yelp application on my iPhone (without user reviews). I can find all of the closest restaurants, gas stations, etc in seconds. It plots them on the map close to me, close to my destination, or along my route. Phone numbers are also given. It's fantastic.

3) The GPS options are another great feature. You can choose to view the map in 2D (classic format, above-view) or in 3D. In 3D, the user can adjust the road view for a variety of angles (it looks like the default angle is around 45 degrees downward). The map will show buildings along your route in a realistic silhouette. It seems pretty cool, but I opted for 2D simply because I'm so used to it. You can also change the voice to one of 4 or 5 pre-set choices.

4) The iPod integration is unreal (with the use of IPC-709 iPod cable- $30). I use my iPhone for virtually everything media-related in the 726E. The iPhone recommends going into Airplane Mode to reduce interference, but I can't notice any discernible drop in quality (it's important to me to have access to incoming calls). Once connected, all functions of the phone are accessible through the head unit. You can search and play by artist, album, genre, playlist, etc. It's so great! Additionally, all of the video I have on my phone shows up beautifully on the 7" screen. Moreover, once connected, the system actually charges the iPhone! I couldn't be more thrilled.

A few negative features I read in online user reviews and my opinions:

1) "You can't adjust display output." UNTRUE! You simply need to hold down the AV button to access the video settings.

2) "You can't adjust the GPS voice; it's too quiet." UNTRUE! You can adjust the volume quite easily. Everything is accessible via the touch screen. I will say, though, that the navigation unit will take a little getting used to. It's not completely intuitive, and the trillion features complicate things a tad.

There are other minor improvements and options in the 726E, but these are the main reasons I'm so ecstatic with my purchase. All of the gripes I had with the 5500 have been thoroughly resolved. I couldn't be more happy with my purchase.

*If it's of interest, I also outfitted the set-up with the back-up camera and the Sirius tuner (you need BOTH the ECL-SC1 and the SCC1 to enable Sirius. That kind of sucks, but there you have it.) I'm in love with this set-up.

1) Navigation is so user friendly. The 3D maps are so precise, clear and beautifully layed out.

2) Radio and Sirius radio is awesome

3) Picture is so bright and clear.

4) Bluetooth is wonderful!

6) IPOD connectivity is great and one can view videos/music on the screen from Ipod.

7) This is the only unit in the market that can play a DIVX CD

In nutshell, I recommend this product wholeheartedly with no reservations.

I have finally installed this a few weeks ago. I was happy with how easy it is to install and wire up. The sound is good. Once you have all the settings programed and you are starting to get familiar with the controls. I found that I do not even have to look at the unit to change stations or inputs anymore. Also I prefer a knob for volume controls and it gives you good starting point to find the other controls by feel for those that prefer not to take their eyes off the road. Also the input variety is nice, I still have to try the ipod & usb inputs. Overall it is a clean unit that is easy to use.

This is a great tuner for you ipod. I ran the included cords (has a usb extentioin cord and an ipod usb cord) to my glove box so I just leave it in there. No need to mess with it at all as the redeiver also charges your ipod. My next test is going to be with one of the passport external hard drives with 140 gig of music to see how well it handles it. I have read elsewhere that it does a good job with externals. One thing that is kind of a pain is the shuffle feature. It wants to shuffle all the time so I am going to have to dig through the manual to see how to control the shuffle better, its like it is the default setting for the ipod of something. This has a lot less buttons than other tuners which I like, but they didnt cut any features. Buttons do multiple tasks and the volume knob turns to select settings. Lots of power on this one too. Seems like a quality unit and the only one I have seen that has a two year warranty.

I had an alpine with ipod control that was the bigest pain in the a**; this Pioneer is smooth and easy especially for the price relatively speaking. Got one for my wifes car too. I like having the same unit in all vehicles so I dont have to try and remember what does what, just listen to the tunes.

Well I got this product for my girlfriend as a Christmas gift since I saw it in a store I liked it and I gave it to her as gift because of the illumination and features plus it was compatible with her Jeep Liberty of 2004. The only think I missing and one of the reason I would give it a 4 stars and not 5 is that instead of having the 30,000 colors that the company advertises in the box I noticed since I got it that it only turns in perhaps 15 different colors and then it keeps repeating the same colors over and over again, I do not see where are the 30,000 colors that it suppose to have? I have check the manual but it doesn't say nothing about the illumination and how to actually see the 30,000 colors in it and I also went to the web site and neither there has anything information about the 30,000 colors.

So I am guessing it is just a trick or something to sell the product when the product actually changes around 15 colors and then keeps repeating the same colors again. So basically in that aspect I am disappointed in the other features like the ipod, the satellite I have only tried the ipod connector I haven't yet mess with the satellite yet, but the ipod connector and sound it is actually great with no interference at all like a radio transmitter, but the radio stations seem to have some interference at times making the sound quality a little annoying and blurry.

The unit itself is resonbly, priced I installed it my self and is no more complicated than your average car deck. Adding the Navigation, Blue tooth, XM and Backup Video Camera Modules brought the total price to just a little over $700.00 The unit perfoms well and the touch screen is great. If you google around you can find the video override code so you can play videos anytime. The main reason I got a Media Player for the car was my 3 year old. Pop in Finding Nemo and she quiets right down for those long car trips. If you budget concesions the Jensen Unit is great. And the moduels you need. The Bluetooth does not work with my blackberry. Yes I would recomend this product.

Upon first look, both aesthetically and technically, seems like a great product and a bargain.

If you know how to install radios, it is a painless installation and the audio is great, however some of the features I chose this for do not work. One feature why I chose this radio over a less expensive version is the bluetooth ability. unfortunately, it is not compatible with my phone and not any other recent Verizon Wireless phones. (CHECK THIS LIST BEFORE BUYING [...]). After some phone calls with the lovely support staff, they also "do not have that information" when asked which version or footprint of bluetooth they have, or if they have any other adapters that may work for my phone.

As another review said, there is about enough room for 3 lines of information on the screen and it would be nice if more than one of them could be used for song information. Currently the only displays are by title only, or by album/artist...very frustrating. Also regarding ipod controls, scrolling is tedious. Must go through all titles, would really make sense for those useless up and down buttons to scroll by 20 or by letter.

gave it three stars, because if the price does drop a bit more, it sounds great and looks really nice

I installed this unit a month ago (nissan Versa, adapter kit costs $26) and I love it. The few buttons it has are actually very convenient to use, the display is beautiful (see *except* below), and the sound quality is excellent (I'm using the stock Versa speakers, but they work great).

I use the Bluetooth with my Razr, works great - I installed the mic on the lower part of the dash, near where the key goes, and people say they can hear me fine. Ipod works great (I switched it to allow the ipod itself to control, and routed the USB cable to the center console area between the front seats. MP3 CD plays well, though it takes about 5 seconds to start playing. MP3 8GB SD card (in a USB adapter) works best for me, although with FAT32 you need to be careful about long file names if you have a lot of files in a few directories.

I don't use the AM at all, and FM only a little - the lack of preset buttons doesn't bother me - just click "Menu" then spin the dial to select. The little square navigation button also works for change tracks/stations. Also, the small little remote is great - my wife and daughter use that instead of the head controls.

*except*: Now, the *almost* part is: inspite of the display being BEAUTIFUL (color adjustable, fairly large), the layout designer at JVC are doorknobs :(. The font used is poor - the position of the items, and relative sizes are bad. Scrolling the font makes it flicker. All things that are purely software (they could have made this thing SOO GREAT). Although some things are configurable, I couldn't address my particular issues (I want the CLOCK to be the most visible, followed my song title, then maybe track time - instead, they made the "USB REAR", in a VERY readbale bold font and then GIANT USB logo, the most obvious thing, squeezing the clock down to the lower left, in big, but too thin font - then right in the middle of everything, the song title, also in the same thin font).

I have a glimmer of hope that a new firmware will somehow be made available for this exceptional hardware platform, but in the mean time I'll just let my ears enjoy it, instead of my eyes :)

I purchased this unit from 6th Ave. Electronics. Its a very nice unit. As stated by prevoius reviewers the screen is small and hard to see during the daytime( but you shouldn't be looking at it while driving anyway). The multiple color options will help in that department. Its cool to be able to change colors when you want to. As for sound I have it in a 2004 xterra and man what a difference in sound. This HU makes my speakers really put out good quality sound. I also like the fact that its a detachable face unit with two USB connections. I had a good friend put it in for me and he hooked up the bluetooth mic as well. The sound from it is good as long as the windows are up. The array of options from this unit is just my liking. You won't be sorry with it. I can live with the small screen and eventhough its hard to see during the day I made some minor adjustments with the colors to help a bit. Overall not a bad radio from JVC. The ability to use my Ipod is a really big plus and was one of the reasons why I brought this unit. Also you can choose how to control the Ipod by either the Ipod itself or from the HU OR remote control once its plugged in the front USB port. If you put it in the rear one it will be controllled by the radio. Hope this will help in anyone making a decision on a decent HU.

"Just what I needed" 2010-01-09

I have had this unit for about a week now and love it. It is just what I was looking for at about half the price of many comparable units. My expectations were simple: single CD/MP3 disk player, Aux, USB, double DIN, great sound, friendly interface. The Sony WXGT77UI delivers on all counts. My greatest problem was me--I thought I could install it with the install kit and harness that I purchased separately with the unit. Wrong. Turns out my old deck was the jam-prone Pioneer 6-disk changer with a premium sound system (extra amps under the dash) found in many Fords. The harness I bought didn't even begin to map to the gazillion wires going into my old deck. I wasn't even sure the new Sony unit would work without major wiring surgery. Fortunately, my local stereo installer whipped it off in less than an hour at a very reasonable price. Super sound (partly due to the original premium sound system) and reasonably intuitive interface. FM reception is comparable to my old high-end deck.

I wanted the double DIN format to avoid the tiny buttons and multifunction operations typical of single DIN units and I'm glad I did. I had mildly preferred the USB to be on the front face instead of the rear-connected pigtail, but the pigtail works out fine too. My only complaint is that Sony appears to value aesthetics over utility--the button labeling is Sony's typical dark gray on black with the contrast ratio of a fog bank. Combined with the tiny point-size of the labels, this makes for some guess work, especially during the day. This should be less of a problem as I get more used to the unit. All in all, it is a great deck for a very attractive price. Highly recommend it.

This device give as much u migh have expected since its price, it works perfectly with my iphone (main reason I bought this stereo was to use it with it). Maybe I am little disapointed about some function buttons cause they are kind of hard to press... I mean u have to press them in the exact right point for them to work, sound is good but the function that improves the quality of sound of compresed music as mp3 does not make difererence to me...

Overall I am satisfied but I think with its size grapichs should have been better... probably next time I spend a little more money to try some touch screen device...

This is by far the greatest radio I have ever purchased. I replaced my factory radio in a 06 ford focus with this radio and I wish I would have done it the first day I bought this car. All I did was go buy a mounting kit and the radio practically installed it self it was so easy. The only prblem I ran into was the wiring. I had about 15 factory wires and only about 12 aftermarket wires. I simply got on the internet and found a wiring diagram for my car and it was all down hill from there. This radio looks like it came from the factory in the dash, that is how well it fit. No trimming away of anything on my car. It worked great. I think the coolest thing is that when I use the usb port and plug in my ipod or an MP3 player you can control albums and songs through the remote which is a handy little gadget. I would totally recommend this radio to anyone. And the things you can adjust on this thing seems endless. GREAT JOB SONY!!!!!!!

Recently replaced factory speakers in 2000 Accord with aftermarket Pioneers (don't recall the model; 6.5" in front 6x9" rear) but the factory deck just couldn't push them loud/clear enough. If I bought a new deck I wanted it to integrate w/ iPod Touch. After much shopping around and almost settling on a single din Kenwood model, I found this on a random search for double din decks. I had looked at a few DDs before but the price on most was significantly more than I wanted to pay, and I really wasn't thrilled with the look of most of them. My requirements for a deck were basically just USB integration that wouldn't take over my iPod when I plugged it in (some models don't allow you to switch between Ipod control through the deck/through the Ipod itself) and possibly some sub pre-outs if I decided to go that route later on. This thing delivers on both accounts. As an added bonus, it actually looks really good, better IMO than any of the other DDs I've seen. Controls are large and easy to navigate, as I wasn't a huge fan of the button-less radio preset models that seem to be the norm nowadays. You can switch from blue to green back-lighting to match the interior lighting scheme on the dash, and the pre-set equalizer options offer good sound for a range of music tastes (there is also a custom EQ setting). Build quality seems excellent. Volume knob has a smooth yet solid feeling click to it during rotation. This was my first install, and after pulling up a how-to online on getting my old deck out, installation was a breeze, probably less than 30min start to finish. Ipod touch integration was seamless, and it was a simple matter of holding down one button to switch between deck/iPod controls. No comparison to the factory deck as far as sound quality. Everything coming out of the speakers was louder, crisper, just sounded better. I was surprised to see that there are very few reviews of this unit online, which sort of sent up a flag for me, but given its low price, brand recognition, and feature set I picked it up anyway. Only had it a few days, but so far I'm thrilled.

I too got a faulty unit. While the radio reception was pretty bad (I have it mounted in the center console of my boat and probably need an antenna) everything else initally worked. Unfortunately, the second weekend on the new boat none of the buttons did what they are suppose to. The power on/off doesn't work, the voume knob doesn't change anything, to change the mode from CD to FM to Aux to iPod I have to open the faceplate and press the "eject" button for cd's. Only about 20% of the buttons are operational and those that do work don't do what they are suppose to. I normally would attribute this to some bad luck but I read another reviewer's post on this unit and decided to comment. The worst part is that now I have to do all the de-installation/re-installation work myself. Oh yeah, and it ate one of my favorite CD's.

Added a $5 plug in antenna to my new unit and it works like a charm.

I spent quite a bit of time installing this radio in my boat. After a few hours of building an enclosure, soldering, and mounting I plugged in the wiring harness and...nothing. No display, no sound, nada.

I checked all connections right up to the where the harness plugs into the back of the unit with a multi-meter to ensure it was getting proper voltage, which it was. Went through the entire troubleshooting manual which was of no help.

When I called Sony, even though it was only 5:15 PM ET their toll free customer support was closed. I had to call a domestic (US) toll number which of course forwarded me to India. After ten minutes navigating a phone tree, I finally got in touch with a tech who eventually concluded it was a defective unit and wanted me to send it (brand new, mind you) to a Sony authorized service center at my shipping expense. Um yeah, I'll get right on that.

When I logged onto Amazon for a return and replacement, it said they were not officially the sellers but only fulfillers(even though it shipped with Prime) and that they would refund my money but not exchange it. I'm probably better off anyway.

Sony's quality levels have sank like a stone over the past 15 years. This is the first thing I purchased of theirs in quite a while. Shame on me.

Purchased this unit to replace my old one. Chose it for the USB iPod interface. Great unit. Local iPod interface is a bit difficult to use, but holding the MODE button down for a few seconds switches the UI back to the iPod, which is a MUST with teenagers on the boat. Added a USB extension so the kids could plug in behind the drivers seat and change the songs so I can concentrate on driving. Unit has plenty of power, separate sub outputs. One thing I recommend is shortening the 'auto-off' feature so you don't run the boats battery down at night.

This is the third stereo I've had in my boat and I like it. It has lots of features and was very easy to install. Based on the other two stereo's I have used, this one plays cleaner, loader and allows my kids to use their MP3 players. I especially like the ability to put an MP3 CD in and let it play on shuffle for the whole afternoon. Some stereos take awhile to find the next random song, this one does it very quickly which is a big plus. The wireless remote is a nice feature but you have to be facing the stereo. The only drawback is when you change the volume if you accidently push on the volume knob, you go to the setup menu. Just a bit of a nuisance.

Fundamentally, the sound quality is great. I like the 4 volt pre-outs because I'm using a separate crossover and two amps. Overall the sound is excellent. But the menus--ugh, not at all intuitive. I have three major gripes: 1)No mid EQ--WTF? Both of my former Blaupunkts had treble, bass, AND mid EQ and for less money. With this thing, you need to buy the extra "imprint" system for lots more $ just to have a mid tweak. I always prefer a slight cut in certain harsh mid frequencies and now I can't. 2)Ipod navigation can be brutal on a big collection--for instance if you know the name of the song but not anything else, you can go to percentage search with the numbered (radio station preset) buttons and narrow it down to a section of the alphabet, which can be a pretty broad section, say A-G. But now you have to scroll through all the A to G titles one at a time with the dial, which seems endless. Who has that much patience? Couldn't they find a way to let you go to a LETTER? Also if you're down the hierarchy of folders, say, from artist to album but want to go back up to artist, you have to start all over again from the beginning of search mode--no way to just "go up one level" (left) as on ipod navigation itself and as on my last blaupunkt. 3)Most frustrating: If you are navigating and hesitate a bit too long, it times out and you have to go BACK to the beginning of the whole process. Grrrrgh! In short, I didn't buy another blaupunkt because I had two of them die an early death but they definitely had the more intuitive and functional menu nav. All things considered, I'd rather just have an aux in (which this lacks--it just offers the high speed ipod connect and a USB cable, no aux jack) and just use the ipod itself to navigate.

This head unit lets you play music from an Ipod or a USB thumb drive. It displays the song and artist from both and allows you to setup folders and playlist. It has six channel pre-outs (4 channels plus the subwoofer) It has Imprint and is infinitely adjustable. I was able to fine tune my system and it sounds great. Now, throw in Satellite radio, HD radio, Bluetooth, and the BioLite display. The display looks great and is easy to read in any light. The menu is easy to navigate and the sound quality is the best I have heard in any car. This is the reason I choose an Alpine. I is the best. As expected.

MP3/Hard Drive issue :

I have always been an owner/user of Alpine recievers. Before I purchased this model, I wanted to make sure that the reciever I purchased had a usb input and had the ability to play mps's straight from a hard drive. It plays them just fine; the problem lies with how the unit navigates the file structure you have set up on your hard drive. I have a hard drive with about 80GBs of mp3's with standard Group/Album/Song structure, and instead of displaying only the base files, it disays every single one all at once, in a chaotic order. While connected to a hard drive full of mps3's, trying to find a particular album or song using this reciever is painstakingly annoying, and in some cases it won't even display certain folders.

For mp3 purposes, I think it's time to say goodbye to the hard drive idea and say hello to an ipod; at least with this reciever.

I truly wanted this to be an amazing review, and the sound I get from this unit is amazing. Unfortunately there are so many draw backs that I have decided to return it. First let me say I purchased this unit from Best Buy, not Amazon. I got the installation kit and wiring kit so installation was truly a breeze. Connect green wire to green wire, red to red, etc. Worked great first try. Then the practical problems began.

I purchased this unit for its bluetooth capabilities to work with my droid phone.

1. The bluetooth music playback is intolerable. The music skips and has tempo issues so bad that it is not usable. I later found out that many bluetooth units are having this same issue, even the Ford Sync units which come factory installed. Hopefully this will be solved with future encoding upgrades so the bandwidth being used over bluetooth does not conflict and choke with other signals built into a phone, like wifi. For now though I had hoped the aux in would solve the problem and make this unit useable.

2. The aux in worked perfectly and sounded great but unfortunately some genius put the built in mic behind the faceplate of this unit making the audio to everyone I call muffled and full of static. The few calls that were audible to the caller were done with the engine off in the driveway.

3. To top this unit off there is a white ring light around the volume knob that is blinding at night and no way I can find to dim or disable this. I can dim the readout but not this very bright light.

Conclusion,

I truly wanted to find some workarounds to make this unit work as it was a Christmas present from my wife and kids so I could have all the benefits of bluetooth in the vehicle but it has been a complete disappointment and I will be returning it and waiting until I can justify spending the money to get a unit that at least allows me to have clear calls over bluetooth until the music over bluetooth can be improved upon.

Final suggestion. If this is the price range you are looking at then buy a unit with an aux in for music playback but use your bluetooth headset for clear calls.

I needed Bluetooth and a stereo that could play my iPhone/iPod in my 2005 Toyota Corolla and this Sony stereo works great! I have a 3G iPhone and I am able to use the Bluetooth phone AND Bluetooth Audio with this stereo, no wires, and it is clear enough for people to talk to me with ease and the sound of my iPod is great. I had the stereo installed at Best Buy and it was the stereo that they recommended for the price, quality and features. Happy with my purchase.

Streaming BT audio from my Sony Ericsson C905a cellphone works great.

Listening to voice messages through the system is real convenient and quality is great.

Voice dialing through the unit is great and reliable.

Only complaint is carrying on a conversation while driving over 20 mph results in lots of echo, background noise etc for the other person you are talking to. If you intend on using this to actively engage in conversation a majority of the time, look to a dedicated hands free device like the Sony HCB-108 instead.

I give it a 5 anyway since for the price you can't expect much more.

Only con I see in this is the bluetooth microphone(I can't figure out where it is!) . People on the other side can't hear me clearly most of the time. May be an external microphone might resolve this.

The Kenwood MP-242 is simply fantastic! Real clean, crystal clear sound and bass boost plus proper EQ will make any existing stereo speakers sound great. Easy to navigate controls, looks real nice with the blue backlighting. Perfect for an iPod and a really decent price for such high quality. You can dim the display for night driving and there's no annoying beeping like so many other modern car stereos. I love it!

I've installed this unit in my 89 toyota pick up. I absoloutley love it. very easy to install. works amazing. looks good. the volume goes up to 46 which is crazy loud. AUX input works great with my mp3 player. i currently have my XM xpress hooked up to it. works great. some reviews say the dial is too thin. i havent had a problem with it. its easy to turn. the HD works well, even if it does take a few seconds to load. i live in the mountains and i get great reception. great unit for a good price. i will buy from DUAL again. highly recommended!!!

Purchased this unit in Feb. of 2009. Worked and sounded great. Easy to install. But, I live in the Phoenix area and it burned up. The unit was so hot when it failed, that I could not touch the chassis. The A/C was on, but not much circulation under the dash. I shipped it back on 9-9-2009, and I was told 3-4 weeks before I see it again. I'll let you know..........

I have not had this long, so I can't comment on durability, but so far so good. The sound is great and has lots of features including the Aux plug and the HD tuner. I do have an issue with that though. I live about an hour away from the closest HD tower so I only get a few scattered moments of HD radio. When I do, it sounds AMAZING, but here's the deal. I've noticed in a few areas that the regular tuner and HD tuner are on different times, so that when the tuner is skipping between regular and HD, its like talking to someone on the phone who has the same channel on their tv and you can hear what is going on a few seconds b4 they do. You'll hear a part of the song in HD, then it will switch to regular and play that part all over again. Like some kind of delay. Very annoying, and no way to turn it offthat I know of. I also wish there was a way to switch the tuner button from automatic to manual permnantly. It is always on search unless you hold down a button. Then you can search one channel at a time. BUT if you don't touch it for 5 seconds it switches back to automatic search, which doesn't seem to pick up every single station. Doesn't give you much time to decide if you like that song or not. Overall I do like this thing and would recommend it.

If you want a really decent car stereo that has HD radio for a great price, this is the deck for you. Nice set of features for a unit in this price range. The Aux input on the front is really handy for playing your iPod or MP3 player through your car speakers. This unit comes with a remote, but I don't know why you would need it unless you want to let your kids control the deck from the back seat. HD stations sound great with this unit and the regular FM stations sound really good too. The CD player sounds excellent as well and the equalizer presets make it easy to get the best sound out of each source you listen to. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I'm not crazy about the clock display. (That's a minor point though.) All in all, an excellent value.

I got the radio in a very timely fashion. I bought it to replace a radio in my truck that could not play CDs and thought I would give HD a try at the same time. Installation was a snap. I was able to switch color for color. It slid easily into the dash where my former radio was mounted.

I would have given a five star approval but the directions for making the settings were a little confusing. The HD is great. You'll find new radio station on the same dial with old numbers, and the HD is FREE. I'm for anything that is free.

My son liked the radio also and said he would like one for his truck, so I bought him one for his birthday.

The presentation is very nice, in DVD funtion is excellent.

When you are listening MP3 music the files sounds are excellent, my only concern is in the radio mode, some times the estation reception is no too good.

I caution anyone who is looking for an in-dash DVD player not to get this item. I still own this item however I'm very dissapointed with the quality, with both the sound and its performance. The sound is nothing to brag about, the firmware is very old (it won't play a lot of dvds out there), and the CD/DVD skips back to the beginning everytime you play anything in it! Good luck you guys if you wanna brave this product...

Just installed it into my 1970 VW Beetle. Fits perfectly and sounds great. I'm getting MUCH better reception than I ever had on my previous radio, which had probably been in the car since 1980. I'm sure I wont need the audio cassette player, but the ipod plug will come in handy. I paid $20 for this radio. Cant beat that price if you just want a simple radio that takes care of business.

This is an inexpensive 2 shaft stereo. It is easy to install, the wires are well marked. The spacing between the two shafts is not the same for all cars, it was too narrow for my 64 buick, forcing me to cut up my mounting plate in my dash(something that I hoped to avoid) As others have stated, the tuning mechanism is a bit weak, holds the station in your driveway, but I found it lost the station as I drove around town. The mp3 imput works but you have to really crank up the volume in order to hear it. I'll have to dig out the old cassettes and give that a try.

I bought a REI RAF-4C AM/FM Digital Stereo Radio with Cassette Player for inside hooked up to a DC power supply and the radio does not have a Aux input but is a 2 shaft design so there are few radios that fit without major modifications to the faceplate. The shafts on this radio are sightly farther apart and the center part slightly bigger so the openings had to be dremeled to fit the radio. I had to cut the speakers wires and the power wires from the factory harness and splice them together. I also removed the headphones jack so I could hook the speakers up so I covered the Headphones jack up. I removed the headphone Jack because the speaker - wires are hooked to the - connection for the radio on the factory unit and to hook that up it needed to be hooked with all four speaker wires hooked to the radio. With the faceplate on it looks like it came like that from the factory and not with the other unit. This unit looks more modern than the one that came with the radio from the factory.
